The story
Dr Michael 'Robby' Robinavitch runs the emergency department of an overstretched Pittsburgh trauma centre, where the beds never stay empty for long. Told hour by hour in real time, each season covers one punishing shift as doctors, nurses and wide-eyed trainees race between emergencies big and small and impossible decisions, with too few staff, too little money and the long shadow of the pandemic hanging over everyone.
Why it matters
Reuniting key creative figures from ER, The Pitt paired a real-time format with an old-fashioned weekly, prime-time release on Max, and the gamble paid off. It won the Emmy for Outstanding Drama Series twice and topped Nielsen's streaming chart, showing that a network-style procedural could thrive as a streaming original.
