The story
In a sleepy corner of rural Oklahoma, four Indigenous teenagers hustle, pilfer and scheme to raise money for a fresh start in California, the dream their late friend Daniel never got to chase. As they wrestle with grief, family duties and the eccentric adults who fill their small town, getting out turns out to be far more complicated than the plan suggested.
Why it matters
It was the first American series with all-Native American writers and directors and an almost entirely Indigenous cast and crew, and it launched on streaming rather than cable. Its warm, offbeat portrait of reservation life won two Peabody Awards, showing that FX's Hulu-first releases could carry culturally significant work.
