The story
A quietly spoken strategist known only as the Professor assembles eight criminals, each code-named after a city, for an outrageous scheme: take over Spain's Royal Mint, hold the staff hostage and print a fortune while the police negotiate outside. Narrated by the impulsive Tokyo, the story cuts between the siege and the months of preparation, as clashing egos, romances and divided loyalties threaten to wreck the plan from within.
Why it matters
Money Heist is the definitive proof that streaming can turn a domestic disappointment into a global phenomenon. Its Antena 3 ratings faded, but Netflix's unpromoted re-cut became the platform's most-watched non-English series, prompting new parts and an overall deal for creator Álex Pina; Part 4 alone drew 65 million households in four weeks.
How it was rescued
Planned as a two-part limited series, La casa de papel ran for 15 episodes on Spain's Antena 3 in 2017, where ratings fell short and the network did not continue it. Netflix bought global rights in December 2017; its re-cut became a worldwide hit, and in April 2018 Netflix ordered new episodes, with Part 3 premiering on 19 July 2019.
