The story
Around the year 2000, the girl group Girls5eva enjoyed a fleeting taste of pop fame before fading from view. Twenty years on, four former members are stuck in decidedly unglamorous lives, from a restaurant job to a dental surgery to a carefully faked social-media image, when a rising rapper samples their old hit. Sensing one last shot, they reunite to chase the stardom that slipped away.
Why it matters
Girls5eva is a streamer-to-streamer rescue. Dropped by Peacock after two seasons, it moved to Netflix, which released its third season all at once. Critics stayed loyal throughout, with season three scoring 100% on Rotten Tomatoes, though Netflix cancelled the show later that year.
How it was rescued
Girls5eva launched on Peacock in May 2021 and ran for two seasons there. Peacock cancelled it after season two, and in October 2022 it was announced that the show would move to Netflix, which released the whole six-episode third season on 14 March 2024.
