The story
When children start disappearing from the small German town of Winden, the search exposes the secrets of four intertwined families – and a passage in the caves under the town's nuclear plant that links 2019 with 1986 and 1953. As characters slip between eras, the same people appear at different ages, played by different actors, and a conspiracy reaching across generations starts to surface. It is a puzzle box built on cause, effect and paradox.
Why it matters
Dark was Netflix's first German-language original, part of a wave of internationally produced originals that followed Mexico's Club de Cuervos and Brazil's 3%. Its intricately plotted story ran its course in three seasons, the finale was praised as a satisfying conclusion, and the BBC later ranked it among the greatest TV series of the century.
