Yahoo's video site started in 2006 as Yahoo! Video, first a search engine for clips across the web and then, from June that year, an upload site in the style of YouTube. In February 2008 it narrowed its focus to video hosted by Yahoo itself, and in December 2010 the upload feature was removed altogether.
Relaunch as Screen
The site reopened as Yahoo! Screen in October 2011 with eight original programmes, part of a push into web series. Among them was Burning Love, which ran for three seasons on Screen, earned Emmy nominations and was syndicated to the E! cable channel in 2013. Screen also streamed Saturday Night Live clips under a 2013 deal and, in October 2015, an NFL International Series game between the Buffalo Bills and Jacksonville Jaguars — the first NFL game shown almost entirely online.
Saving Community
In June 2014 Yahoo picked up Community, the sitcom NBC had cancelled after five seasons. The sixth season premiered on Yahoo Screen on 17 March 2015, and within a month the comedies Sin City Saints and Other Space had followed — both available only in the US.
None of it paid off. After a $42 million write-down blamed on its three original series, Yahoo shut Screen as a portal on 4 January 2016 and moved its shows to an originals section of Yahoo TV.
In Britain, Community was better known from television and later streaming than from Yahoo: it aired on Universal TV from 2011 to 2016, all six seasons were added to Channel 4's All 4 in 2018, and the series joined Netflix worldwide in April 2020.
